January’s Cafe sponsored by Opera Software

operalogoOn January 30 all coffees will be sponsored by Opera Developer Network from the creators of the Opera web browser.

For those of you that don’t know the history of the firm: Norwegian-based Opera has been making web browsers since 1995 and made their first mobile phone version back in 1998.

They are big campaigners when it comes to improving Web Standards, including accessibility and cross-device websites, and every month produce a “State of the Mobile Web” report.

Last April one of  these revealed that 40% of traffic on through their Opera Mini browser was to social media sites.

Many thanks go to Opera Evangelist Bruce Lawson for agreeing to sponsor BSMC and to come to the event. Also much gratitude is owed to Andy Mabbett, who had the nouse to ask him to!

    So am I Bruce.

Thanks, Jo – Geldof’s got nothing on me when it comes to asking for money.

Have I read that right? The meet is during the day, on a Friday?

Must be nice to be able to take time off work. While I’m interested in social media I’m not a freelancer and can’t walk out of the office for a two hour coffee.
    :(

    Hiya Wedge,

Yes, you have got that right – the SMC is during the day.

The cafes have been very succssful so far, so we have no plans to move them.

However, there may be plans in the future to hold some evening events.

In the meantime, you may want to check out some of the other social-media events that go on in Birmingham.

Two excellent ones that are outside of work hours are Likemind which takes place from 8am to 10am and the Bloggers’ Meet, which in reality attracts a wider crowd than just bloggers and takes place in the evening.
