Next event, Friday 30 October 2009

by Chris Unitt on September 26th, 2009 in Next meet

The next Birmingham Social Media cafe meet-up will be:

At the Coffee Lounge from 10am on Friday 30 October 2009.

Turn up, grab a coffee and make your way downstairs to meet, chat and generally hob-nob with an array of interesting people who use (or are looking to use) social media in their working lives.

This month our quarterly supporters, Rhubarb Radio, will be providing the coffees.

There’s no need for invites, tickets are any of that business, but it’d be great if you could announce that you’re coming, either:

If you’d like to receive reminders of these meet-ups by email then you can sign up to the mailing list in the sidebar on the right-hand side of this website.

Next meet-up, Friday 25 September 2009

by Chris Unitt on September 13th, 2009 in Next meet

It’s nearly that time again – the next Birmingham Social Media cafe meet-up will be:

At the Coffee Lounge from 10am on Friday 25 September 2009.

The format will be the same as ever – with a free coffee/tea in hand, you’ll be able to meet up with others in the digital/social media arena and kick around ideas, experiences and nuggets of info.

If you’ve not been before then I can pretty much guarantee you’ll meet a few people who will interest and inspire you with what they’re doing.

If you come regularly then odds are you keep chatting to the same people – if you like we’ll find you some new people to speak to.

With a new academic term just starting, Birmingham City University will be providing the coffees this month.

Please do announce your attendance:

Please help spread the word a little too – there are many out there who don’t know what a wonderful bunch of people come together every month.

Next meet-up, Friday 28 August 2009

by Chris Unitt on August 26th, 2009 in Next meet

After all the talk of data we’re going back to basics this week, with a regular Birmingham Social Media cafe meet-up.

We’ll be at the Coffee Lounge from 10am on Friday 28 August 2009.

Most people will be there to meet up, make new friends and have a productive natter over a cup of coffee. Others are planning to have meetings or hang around to get some work done in the company of some bright and interesting individuals. All are very welcome.

Screen WM (our ongoing supporters) will be providing the coffees this week.

If you fancy announcing your attendance then:

Hope to see you on Friday.

BSMC, 31 July 2009

by Chris Unitt on July 21st, 2009 in Next meet

The next Birmingham Social Media Cafe is this Friday, 31 July 2009. As ever, everyone will be meeting downstairs at the Coffee Lounge on Navigation Street from 10am.

Our quarterly sponsors, Rhubarb Radio, will be paying for the coffees. If you see any of those good folk (and do seek them out – they’re doing some interesting work) then please say thank you. Even better, tune in and check out the shows – this week they’re broadcasting live from the renowned Supersonic Festival at the Custard Factory.

The BSMC is an informal get-together for anyone using (or interested in using) social media. If that sounds like you, then come on down and have a chat with someone – there are always enough friendly faces around. This month, Andy Mabbett has volunteered to be the chief friendly face making sure all goes swimmingly.

There are no tickets or invites – if you’d like to announce your intention to come along then you can do on Facebook, Upcoming or the wiki.

Also, we’ll soon be announcing an evening event taking place on Wed 19 August – keep an eye out (and your diary free) for that.

May’s meet-up

by Chris Unitt on May 27th, 2009 in Next meet

Time really has flown since the last get-together and the next one is already just a couple of days away.

As ever we’ll be downstairs at the Coffee Lounge on Navigation Street from 10am to midday. Coffees this month are being provided by Clarity Digital. If you take advantage then do say thanks.

As with the last few meet-ups there’s likely to be a few people hanging around to do some work in the afternoon (co-working, as the kids are calling it).

There’s a good number of people signed up on the Facebook event and a couple more on the wiki so that’s all good. If you’re planning to come then maybe add yourself to one so others can see.

If you’ve not come down to the Birmingham Social Media Cafe before then it’d be good to see you. Things are nice and informal and the best way to get involved is simply to walk up to someone and introduce yourself. Everyone’s there for chats so get stuck in!

The BSMC April meet-up

by Chris Unitt on April 10th, 2009 in Next meet

The next Birmingham Social Media Cafe will be on 24 April at the Coffee Lounge on Navigation Street.

The marvellous Rhubarb Radio will be getting the coffees in.

All are welcome, whether you’ve come along to the past seven meet-ups or have never made it down before.

As before, there are likely to be a few people bringing laptops with them so they can spend the afternoon there too, using the space for some ad-hoc coworking. See Pete’s post for info about this.

There are plenty of places to announce that you’ll be coming. Feel free to use all or none of:

If you want a reminder by email a few days before the event then sign up to the mailing list.

The March meetup is tomorrow

by Chris Unitt on March 26th, 2009 in Next meet

Where? Coffee Lounge on Navigation Street.

When? Tomorrow, 10am to midday.

What? A chance for a whole bunch of people who are interested in social media to get together and discuss, plan, scheme and share.

You won’t even have to pay for your coffee/beverage of choice – Screen WM have offered to provide some support to the BSMC and will be covering the drinks tab tomorrow.

There should be plenty to chat about this month:

and I’m sure there’s been plenty more besides.

If there’s anything in particular you want to chat about, or anyone you want to speak to, then say so in the comments and perhaps we can make that happen. I’ll kick things off below.

Btw, if you’ve not seen who’s said they’re coming you can have a look (and add yourself) on the wiki and the Facebook event.

Someone Once Told Me

by Joanna Geary on February 25th, 2009 in Next meet

“Wash behind your ears”

“If you tread on dandelions you’ll need to go to the toilet”

What are the phrases that have stuck with you in your life? Do you have any?

It might be worth having a think because Mario Cacciottolo, a BBC journalist and founder of the really interesting project “Someone Once Told Me” will be popping by to this month’s BSMC meet.

SOTM is Mario’s personal project publishing a black-and-white picture every day of someone with a phrase that someone once told them. He will be there to talk about the project and to take pictures of some BSMC members with the phrases that have stuck with them. So get your phrases at the ready and come say hi!

We are also lucky enough to have free coffees again, this time provided by the kind people at Ward Lovett who will be there to introduce themselves.

Next Meet and a visit from The Editors

by Joanna Geary on January 27th, 2009 in Next meet

No, not the above neo-post-punk quartet (maybe next time?).

This will be an entirely different but just as pretty quartet of regional newspaper editors from the Trinity Mirror publishing group.

As part of their training here in Birmingham with Paul Bradshaw, they will be popping down to the BSMC this Friday (Jan 30) to find out more about social media and how they might be able to use it at their titles.

They are:

Mark Thomas: Editor of the Liverpool Daily Post
Andrew Campbell: Executive Editor of the Liverpool Echo
Colin Patterson: Editor of the Sunday Sun in Newcastle
Charles Barker: Executive Editor of The Coventry Telegraph

Please do come along and say hello to them – I think they’ll be surprised by some of the opinions you have on the future of the media.

Also, don’t forget the lovely Bruce Lawson, Opera evangelist, will also be at the Cafe to represent this month’s coffee sponsors: Opera Developers Network.

Should be good!

Feeling “Christmassy” yet or still stressed out by all the shopping left to do?

Well this month’s Christmas social media cafe meet on Friday, December 19 will hopefully put you in the mood for some good cheer.

Coffees will once again be free, this time courtesy of Digbeth-based live music agencyMusic of Distinction.

After coffee we hope you may be able to stay as the Social Media Cafe takes the conversation on to The Old Joint Stock for lunch and then off to the Frankfurt Christmas Market for a glühwein or two! (Lunch and drinks are not free – sorry!)

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

PS. Thanks to Andy Mabbett, Birmingham Social Media Cafe now has its own LinkedIn Group – check it out!
