Due to the Royal Wedding adding to a run of Bank Holidays that will result in no-one in the country working during the second half of April, we’re not going to be holding the Birmingham Social Media Cafe meet-up in April. It just doesn’t look like anyone’s going to be around.
The sun was shining for Birmingham Social Media Cafe today. We were back at Town Hall for the second time and, as usual, an interesting mix of people had turned up for a chat and a coffee.
If you couldn’t make it down, below is a round-up of this morning’s meet-up. The next event will be wedged between Easter and the royal wedding, and we’ll update you on this blog, our Facebook group and our Twitter stream, so join those for further details.
After last month’s successful event, the next venue for Birmingham Social Media Cafe is again in the Town Hall Foyer. If you’ve never been before, it’s the big building with the columns in Victoria Sq. Town Hall opens at 10am, so if you arrive a little early please wait by the doors until there are signs of life.
It would be greatly appreciated if you could help spread the word before the meeting.
The listings are up on Upcoming or Facebook, so let us know if you’re coming.
If you’ve come along before then you’ll know that you’ll find a group of interesting people working in lots of different areas, all using (or looking to use) social media in what they do, whether that’s for promoting, collaborating or creating things online.
If you’ve not come along before then you might like to know that it’s a very informal, friendly and chatty gathering – we try to make new folks feel as welcome as possible. Just come along, grab a drink and join the rest of us for a chat.
If you’re a Twitter user, the hashtag for the meet-up tends to be #bsmc.
Thanks to everyone who came down to Birmingham Social Media Cafe at Town Hall foyer.
We had a great turn out with lots of new people and there were some interesting discussions (not to mention sweets) around.
Details for the next event and venue will be online shortly, so keep an eye on this blog, our Facebook Group, our Twitter page, and/or our mailing list (sign up in the sidebar of this website).
In the meantime, here’s a round-up of some of the tweets and photos from the February event:
Please note the next venue for Birmingham Social Media Cafe is the Town Hall Foyer. If you’ve never been before, it’s the large Greek-looking building in Victoria Sq. The cafe opens at 10am, so if you arrive a little early please wait if it looks closed.
Since this is the first time our event’s changed venue since it started in 2009, it’d be greatly appreciated if you could help spread the word before the meeting.

Thanks to everyone who came down to the first Birmingham Social Media Cafe of 2011 and a big thank you to our sponsors this month, NHS Local (check out their new iPhone app).
We had a good turn out with lots of new people (which is always welcome) and lots of good chats. Details for the next event will be online pretty darn soon, although we’re yet to confirm the venue – keep an eye here, join the Facebook Group, follow @BirminghamSMC on Twitter and/or sign up to the mailing list (in the sidebar of this website) to keep from missing out.

This month we’re very pleased to have NHS local as our sponsor:
NHS local aims to connect citizens and staff to the best available online resources and information and, importantly, to each other. It brings together local health news, information, services and support from across the NHS and from other trusted organisations and individuals.
Moving venue
This might well be the last one at the Coffee Lounge too – we’re after suggestions for a new venue after concerns were raised about access to the downstairs area of the current venue. It’d be good to get your suggestions in the comments on this post here.
Slim pickings this week. Is everyone snowed in or have I missed all the exciting news? Head for the comments to add interesting stuff. Meanwhile:
BCU ECCE – Lots of presentations from the recent Making Mobile Marketing Work event
Media / Digital giants share insights with Midlands marketers – “McCann Interactive, the agency’s digital arm organised its ‘ Digital Well Told seminar’, which also attracted speakers from Google and comScore the leading online marketing insights company”
Got any news that we missed? Add it in the comments or tweet it to @BirminghamSMC.
Due to Christmas and New Year, the next BSMC will be on:
Friday 17 December 2010, downstairs at the Coffee Lounge on Navigation Street (map)
Everyone’s welcome, but especially people who are interested in how we organise, share, produce, profit from and/or enjoy media of any sort. There’s no sign-up, no tickets and no formalities – just come along, grab a drink and have a chat with some likeminded people.
The listings are on Upcoming and Facebook – if you’d like to add yourself to say you’re coming then people will know to look out for you.
There’s no sponsor for this month, but if you’d like to sponsor a BSMC event and get your name known/show off a thing you’ve made in front of a crowd of smart and savvy people then get in touch.
Got something you want to talk about?
We get a good mix of people coming along, so if you want to talk about something in particular then there’s probably someone else who wants to do the same – chats about alternate reality, coworking spaces, how to improve council consultations have all gained traction at the BSMC.
Drop whatever’s on your mind in the comments and we’ll see about finding those other people for you.
Thanks to everyone who came along today and thanks to bmibaby for kindly sponsoring the teas and coffees.
Next month’s event will be a week earlier to avoid some Winterval shenanigans the week after. There’ll be the option of grabbing a festive frankfurter from the German market afterwards. Listings for that will be up shortly.
In the meantime, here are a few tweets from the morning.
Change of venue?
Finally, Alison Smith has requested that we find a new venue in the new year – specifically one that has better disabled access.
Anyone got any suggestions? Decent coffee, excellent proximity to transport and a space that we can take over for a morning are the kinds of benefits I’d suggest we should keep if looking elsewhere.
Sponsoring a social media cafe simply involves covering the cost of the coffees (approx. £200).
Your name will be included in our communications for that month and you will have a short slot at the event to introduce yourself and your organisation.
